Orientation event
Friday 25th November 2016, 6pm – 8pm

Weekend challenge
Saturday 26th November, 9am to Sunday 27th November 2016, 6pm

The challenge is on! Could you design, develop and pitch the next killer smart technology?

If you have passion for technology and the digital and business skills to match – this is a potentially life changing opportunity to collaborate with some world-leading brands, create a company around your idea and bring it to market

This intensive weekend aims to bring together people from business and technical backgrounds to work on creating a start-up business. You’ll have the whole weekend to develop a business plan and prototype product and pitch both to a panel of expert judges who will select a winner

Mars, Waitrose, The Pop-up Business School, Sentinel Housing and the charity Step by Step – have set challenges to create a new smart technology which helps solve a business or societal need for them. These range from improving customers’ shopping experience in Waitrose through to supporting young people out of homelessness and adversity. So whatever your interest area, there will be a challenge that will get your creative and technical juices flowing and you’ll have a first customer!

Read a full summary of the challenges.

To help support and inspire you throughout the weekend mentors will be on hand to talk through your ideas. We will also have a series of keynote expert speakers who will cover all aspects of creating a technology company and taking it to market – including accounting and finance, legal aspects and digital marketing.

How to take part

The fridge will be stocked, the kettle will be on – sleeping is optional.

You can register for this event as an individual or as a team of up to 4/5 people.

If you come as an individual we will put you in the most appropriate team at the orientation event. If you are coming along as a team, it’s best to ensure that you have well rounded skills eg technical skills combined with for example business knowledge, marketing skills and project management, rather then just all technical.

We will have access to the computer science lab but to save time and to simplify your work it is essential that you bring your own equipment including laptops and tablets etc.

All meals, snacks and drinks will be provided. After the Orientation Event on Friday evening the hack weekend will start in earnest at 9am on Saturday morning and will run through to 6pm on Sunday evening inclusive, no going home!

What you could win

At the end of the weekend, teams will pitch their smart technology to a panel of expert judges. The winning team will then get the opportunity to create a company based on their ideas with six months free business support from SETsquared – the world’s leading university business incubator.

It’s simple: innovate, collaborate, create – and you could change your life and potentially change the lives of others.

This event is being jointly organised by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, The SETsquared Partnership and the EU funded Tech Town project.
