Basingstoke gets a head start on the 5G revolution
Located at the Innovation Centre in Basing View, the test bed is set to put Basingstoke at the forefront of this revolution, enabling businesses and entrepreneurs to get a head start on the latest advance in mobile communications. The ‘anytime, anywhere’ connectivity has been brought to the town thanks to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council joining forces with the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre.
A recent breakfast launch at the town’s Ark Conference Centre highlights why 5G is set to impact the digital economy, transforming the way we use mobile technology and creating new opportunities that will change lives.
The borough council’s Cabinet Member for Digital Innovation and Inclusion Cllr Hannah Golding will introduce an eminent panel to the audience, including Chief Operating Officer at University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre Keith Robson, Vice-President at Telefonica and EM3 LEP Board member Dr Mike Short CBE and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the 5G Step Out in Basingstoke Adrian Braine.
Cllr Golding said: “The cutting-edge 5G mobile network test bed at Basing View puts Basingstoke at the heart of pioneering mobile technology. The council is delighted to lend its support to the 5G Innovation Centre and facilitate the use of the 5G test bed by local digital entrepreneurs and growing businesses, which will enable them to develop mobile applications which are fit for the future.
"We are truly at the forefront of emerging technology in mobile communications."
The test bed is directly connected to the £75m research and development facility at the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre. It was built with investment from the Enterprise M3 growth fund, expertise from University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre and support from the borough council, SETsquared, and high-tech start-up Gematech.
Adrian Braine added: “The new 5G test bed at Basingstoke’s Innovation Centre will bring a wealth of possibilities for digital start-ups and change our world like never before.
“Having access to a world-leading facility such as this right on their doorstep will allow businesses to grow, develop new products and explore the next generation of mobile.”
He added: “I hope this unique networking meeting at the Ark will give an invaluable insight into the world of 5G mobile communications and inspire more people to get involved.”
